Two years later, JoJo released her sophomore effort The High Road which featured the number three-peaking "Too Little Too Late", but unfortunately follow up singles failed to match the same level of success and highly publicized troubles with her record label kept her off the official music scene for nine years. That's all changed as the determined artist has released not just one new single, but three. A "tringle". The entire package is set to take JoJo back to the top regions of the charts where she should have been all along.
In a rather unexpected but satisfying move, "When Love Hurts" incorporates house music elements, giving the track a more infectious, dance orientated vibe. With a radio-friendly beat that would dominate the late summer airwaves, JoJo surrounds herself in euphoria and catchy production as a solid vocal performance sheds light on the tricky feelings of love and romance. "When love hurts baby, yeah that's how you know it's real," she proclaims before the whistle-heavy hook comes through, creating the perfect dancefloor anthem.
"Save My Soul" immediately changes the tone and severity of the new three-track release. The piano-heavy, mid-tempo ballad has a sense of urgency as JoJo sings about the dark side of addiction. The R&B-leaning effort perfectly shows off the incredible vocal talents we all knew the artist had as she gets a bit more raw and personal. Though pop lovers may not immediately gravitate towards the track, critics will sing nothing but praise for JoJo's powerful yet effortless performance and flawless backing production.
Finally, the artist brings both sides of her musical personality together on "Say Love", a gorgeous and dramatic ballad with some pop elements thrown into the primarily R&B mix. "But you say I'm perfect, say I'm pretty, say I'm worth it, but if you really care for me, say love," the artist belts as she pleads with a current lover to express their true feelings. There's a somber sense of defeat and vulnerability from JoJo's delivery as her powerhouse vocals become the star of the radio-ready effort.
It's not easy to be out of the ever-changing music industry for nine long years. Since JoJo's last studio album hit the shelves in 2006, acts such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift quickly came in to fight for the artist's young pop crown. Thankfully, the simultaneous release of "When Love Hurts", "Save My Soul" and "Say Love" will open listeners' ears to JoJo's ability to excel in different genres, while still showcasing the determination and drive that's kept her afloat while dealing with seemingly endless label drama.
From the nearest club floor to a packed stadium arena, JoJo has delivered a "tringle" that never falls short of pop/R&B gold status, easily paving the way from an upcoming, highly anticipated third album. We all expected her glorious return to be great... just not this great!
